Travel JournalsI owe my early interest in foreign lands and cultures chiefly to my sixth grade teacher Miss Helen Martin, and to a neighbor, Mr. Ed Quillen, both at that time residents of Seaford, Delaware. With Miss Martin we studied the United Nations and international affairs, and she made us into readers of the world’s news. My best friend Mike Moynihan and I collected stamps, and Mr. Quillen, a passionate philatelist, became our mentor. It was the myriad scripts, languages, and exotic scenes on the stamps from other countries that really captured my imagination. After leaving Seaford, I lived in several foreign parts, including Italy (junior year abroad), Ghana (as a Peace Corps volunteer), Germany, and Austria, and I have traveled through England, Scotland, Wales, most of continental Europe, parts of Russia, East Africa, India and Nepal. A number of my poems distill experiences and impressions from these diverse places. I eventually intend to expand this site with other journal entries, letters, and pictures.
